Impaled Objects
This page discusses what to do if an object gets stuck inside a person's eye. The same technique applies to all other areas of the body that may have an impaled object.
How to stabilize an object sticking out of an eye:
1. Put on a pair of gloves (to keep blood off of your hands and to protect the person's wound from becoming infected with germs and to prevent dirt from getting inside the injured area).
2. Carefully place a doughnut ring over the object and eye until it’s up against the skin surrounding the eye
3. Stabilize the object and ring with kling surrounding the head
4. Always bandage up both the injured and non-injured eyes to help minimize eye movement that could cause further damage. Both eyes move in concert, and this will help decrease movement in the good eye.
This method of stabilizing an impaled object is the same for all areas of the body that have an impaled object.
A doughnut ring is simply a cravat that has been twisted in the shape of a circle. To make one, start by wrapping the end around 2 or more of your fingers. Wider doughnut rings will fit over larger objects while smaller ones will be better at securing smaller impaled objects.
Scenario
A
guy is standing near a tree when an arrow flies through his eye, and remains
stuck in his eye. What do you do?
Answer: Do not remove the arrow. Make a doughnut ring and place it around the arrow next to the eye. Bandage up both eyes to prevent movement in the injured eye because the eyes move in unison. Get the person to an emergency room either by calling for an ambulance or driving the person if a hospital is nearby.
